Possibly from McKenna's The Sand Pebbles.

How strange that you should mention the Sand Pebbles. My Daddy was in the Navy and in China around the time of that incident. He hated the movie because he said it was inaccurate and not like the way it really was.
Is that word used in that book in that context? (i.e. "crazy") Maybe it's some geographic occupational slang carried forward by people who were there, but in such a limited number that it didn't expand to a more general population.

Well, if you know who studies your blog; this should drive him crazy, or hermentile, as Daddy always said. He used it in connection with being crazy, and I just assumed it was an old word that meant that; that he had carried forward from his childhood or youth. But I just looked it up and it doesn't exist, that I can find anyway. The closest was a word which means something about occultism or abstruseness.
I wonder where that word came from for him. I guess we'll never know.
